I have tried for days to get myself to write this post for the last day of kindergarten, but the truth is that the last day and the days since have been very emotional and at times quite heavy. The last day of kindergarten was absolutely fantastic, everyone had dressed up with the letter S in the occasion World Orphan Week (WOW), which seeks to focus attention on the world's orphaned and abandoned children by donating 5 Rands to a better future for the children.
It was really fun to see how many of the children were completely transformed in their costumes, I met alot of Spidermans, Supermans, Sleeping beauties, Snow whites and Stars.

This Friday it was time for a large gathering in the outdoor area in the middle of kindergarten. This gathering was quite different from similar gatherings I have experienced in Norwegian kindergartens. The children sang several songs and they pulled forward all of the children who had had a birthday in the month that passed and sang birthday songs for them. They also gave affirmations to the children in classes that had made an extra effort to improve themselves in different areas. Teachers called up the children who they thought had stood out and explained in front of the kindergarten precisely why the child deserved to get extra attention. It could be anything from being more confident, to be better at controlling their own behavior to help others and show you care.
During the gathering it was time for a parade, all of the children went forward one at a time and did something funny in their costumes while having their picture taken:) But for some it was simply to difficult to sit still when there was so much great music playing! These children have a rythm in their bodies that is out of this world:)
Everyday I'm shuffelin';)
De Tre Bukkene Bruse/ The Three Billy Goats Gruff
After the assembly it was time for an act of the well known fairytale "The Three Billy Goats Gruff" with myself, Åshild and Christina as The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Solveig starring as the big scary troll and Teacher D as the storyteller:)
The Three Billy Goats Gruff where going to the beach to cool down, but to get to the beach they had to cross a bridge.. And under the bridge lived a great big scary troll..
Så gikk de tre bukkene bruse videre til stranden for å kjøle seg ned..:) And then the Three Billy Goats Gruff went on to the beach to cool down..:) |
And snip, snap, snout, this story is told out:) |

Afterwards we enjoyed ourselves with some bisquits and juice that we had brought for the occation:)
The day passed all to quikly, and after our act was finished Ayesha stood up and gave us so many beautiful words, it was completely impossible not to be moved by this. While I was biting back my tears they gave us some amazing gifts that I will always cherish, it was really all to much!<3
SOS caps, Biltong, fruktgodteri, kortmappe:) SOS caps, Biltong, fruitcandy, cardholder:) |
Jeg fikk også denne nydelige koppen, elsker den!<3 I also got this beautiful cup, I really love it!<3 |
But the very best was this<3 I get so emotional every time I look at this.. To my little parrots thank you so much from the bottom of my heart<3

What made the day extra sad on my part was that when we came out of the hall where we had the play more than half of my class had already gone home which meant that I didn't get to say goodbye to a lot of them: '(In addition to that several of the children were absent in recent days. A lot of of these children are SOS children and probably the ones that I had attached myself most to, so this made the day extremely heavy for me. On top of this there had been a number of serious incidents with one of the children in my class recently, and not being able to say goodbye was simply heartbreaking. I cried all the way home and many hours after when thoughts began to surface. Since we were meeting Julius (volunteer in SOS) later in the evening I decided to spend the time until then to write letters to all the children I didn't get to say goodbye to to tell them just how special they are and how much I love them all. It helped at least a little to know that they wouldn't come on Monday thinking that I had left without saying anything to them, since I know that many of my smallest children has difficulties with seperating from people. So thank you to Uncle Julius who saved the day on my part :)
Saying goodbye to our teachers was no easy matter .. This experience has meant so much to me and I can not describe how grateful I am for everything they have let us be a part of. These teachers do a job that so many others would not have even considered taking, not because the salary is good, but simply for the children. Altogether they are five teachers with over 80 children, where a large number are children with special needs. It's definitely not anyone who could manage to do the job they are doing so well and with such limited resources. I'm really happy and proud to have been allowed to get to know these amazing people <3 They are so inspirational and truly everyday heroes<3
Yesterday I was asked if I would have wanted to be without this experience because of the many challenges one can encounter, but the truth is that I would not have traded this against anything. The challenges will be there whether or not people choose to see it, on my part I'd rather want to be part of the solution than the problem. These amazing kids and these brave teachers have really touched me and will always have a special place in my heart <3
Hold it down you SOS warriors, hold it down you SOS chiefs, chiefs, chiefs!<3
Lots of love from Teacher Christel<3
